How Do Solar Panels Work With Your Power Bill? Feed-In Tariffs Explained

Your solar either powers your home or goes to the grid for a small payment. Here is how that shows up on your bill.

How Do Solar Panels Work With Your Power Bill? Feed-In Tariffs Explained

The short answer: Your solar powers your home first. Whatever you do not use goes to the grid, and your retailer pays you a feed-in tariff for it. The rest of your bill is still there: supply charges and whatever you draw from the grid at night.

The three bits of your bill

  • Usage charge, the price per kWh you buy from the grid.
  • Supply charge, a daily fee for being connected, solar or not.
  • Feed-in credit, what you get paid for exported power.

Why using your own solar wins

Buying power from the grid costs far more per kWh than the credit you get for exporting. In regional Queensland the regulated feed-in rate for 2026-27 is around 6 cents per kWh. Using a kWh yourself saves you the full usage price. That is why most good systems are designed around self-use, and why batteries and smart timing matter. See how solar batteries work.

Midday power deals

Some regions now have retailers offering cheap or free midday power under new rules such as the Solar Sharer in NSW, south-east Queensland and South Australia. At the time of writing (November 2026) the details are still rolling out, so check your retailer’s current offer. If you have solar, run your big loads in the middle of the day anyway.

Does it differ by state?

Yes. QLD, NSW, WA and Tasmania each have their own feed-in rules and retailer offers. WA has its own network and tariff structure. Tasmania has fewer federal-style incentives for batteries. Look at your retailer’s current terms, not an old article.

Old 44c deals

If you remember the huge Queensland rate from years ago, that is a different story. See what happened to the 44c Solar Bonus Scheme.

The bit nobody tells you

A tidy bill comes from three things: size the system for your use, shift your usage to the sun, and shop your retailer every year. Upload your bill and we will show you where the money is going.
