Whatever Happened to Queensland’s 44c Solar Bonus Scheme?

The short answer: The 44 cents per kWh Queensland Solar Bonus Scheme closed to new customers in 2012. If you are buying solar today you cannot join it, and you will be on a much lower feed-in tariff.

Why it was so generous

Back when panels were expensive, Queensland paid early adopters 44 cents for every kilowatt hour they sent back to the grid. Some households made a tidy return. It was never meant to last forever, and it did not.

Why it closed

Panel prices dropped, uptake boomed, and the cost of paying those rates was borne by other power users. The state closed it to new applicants in 2012 and it has been winding down for those already on it. If you are on it, check with your retailer and network for current end dates.

What you get now

Feed-in tariffs today are far lower. In regional Queensland, the regulated rate for 2026-27 sits at about 6 cents per kWh, and retailers set their own offers in south-east Queensland. That is why many people now focus on using their solar power at home, and on batteries, instead of exporting for a small payment. Our feed-in tariff explainer has the detail.

Does it differ by state?

Yes. Every state has had its own early scheme and its own wind-down. NSW, WA and Tasmania each have different feed-in rules and retailer offers. Do not assume a neighbour’s old deal applies to you.

Does it still make sense to go solar?

Yes, for most homes, because the savings now come from the power you use rather than the power you sell. Read is solar worth it for the full picture.

A tip if you have an old scheme

If you are still on a legacy tariff, be very careful about changing your system. Adding panels or swapping equipment can affect your eligibility, so check with your retailer first.
