The short answer: Yes. Solar panels can run an air conditioner, and the sun is usually at its strongest exactly when you want to be cool. Running it at night is the tricky bit.
Why aircon and solar suit each other
A hot afternoon means high demand for cooling and high solar output at the same time. A reverse-cycle split system is also efficient, so it does not need a huge slice of your system. A typical home unit uses a fraction of what a big solar system can make on a clear day.
What size do you need
It depends on the unit and how many you run. A single split system might use roughly a kilowatt or so when working hard, but check the rated input on your own unit. Add the fridge, the pool pump and the oven, and you can see why people size up. Our sizing guide walks through it.
What about night time?
Panels do not make power in the dark. You have three options: pay for grid power, use a battery charged during the day, or run the aircon harder in the afternoon to pre-cool the house. A battery covers the evening, but a big aircon load can drain a small battery quickly. See how solar batteries work.
Does it differ by state?
Climate does, more than rules. A house in Emerald or Mount Isa has a heavier cooling load than one in Tasmania. Feed-in rates and battery incentives also vary between QLD, NSW, WA and Tasmania, so check current terms.
Tips that help
- Set the thermostat sensibly. Every degree colder costs more.
- Seal gaps and add insulation before you add panels.
- Run the aircon in the middle of the day if you can, and let the house hold the cool.
- Keep your panels clean. See cleaning solar panels.
The straight bottom line
Solar will take a big bite out of your aircon bill. It will not make it free at midnight. If you want a plan that fits your actual house, book a free Energy Assessment and we will work it out from your power bill.
